Gov. Mitch Daniels' Mitch for Governor campaign committee pocketed more than $200,000 in contributions from Ponzi schemer Tim Durham, his largest single contributor, but he will repay just $3,000 of that money to the bankruptcy trustee charged with marshaling assets for the benefit of the investors who were defrauded out of more than $200 million by Durham according to the Indianapolis Star. In contrast, former Marion Co. Prosecutor Carl Brizzi, who received a similar sum in contributions, repaid more than $195,000 to the trustee. Daniels said earlier that he felt no obligation to repay the money because it was all spent and his gubernatorial campaign committee account had since been closed. Daniels is a multi-millionaire worth more than $50 million.
A political action committee controlled by Daniels, Aiming Higher PAC, will return $10,000 it received in contributions from Durham. The Indiana Republican Party has also agreed to repay $87,875 in contributions from Durham, representing most of the $92,500 it received from Durham. The amount repaid by Daniels probably didn't even cover all the money charged by attorneys for the trustee negotiating with Daniels for repayment of the money. You can bet Daniels will sleep well knowing those unfortunate small investors in Ohio lost their entire life savings, and you can bet the news media in this state won't bother giving him a rough time for caring so little about their plight.
